August kicks off with Live Theater, Canoe Races & a Streamliner Diner Train

August has arrived with a full weekend of activities. If you are visiting Palestine or even looking for "staycation" ideas, there are plenty events for the whole family.

  Shrek the Musical will begin it's final weekend at the Historic Texas Theatre tonight at 7:30 p.m.  This evening, the Palestine Community Theatre, will offer complimentary wine and punch in the lobby before the curtain opens. The live production is also scheduled for Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m.

           If you're interested in adventure and outdoor fun, check out the 24th Annual Neches Wilderness Race, also known as the "Toughest Little Race in Texas."  The kayakers and canoeists will paddle 22 miles down the scenic, Neches River.  The race launches at 8 a.m. on Saturday at Lake Palestine Damn.  It will be a great morning to cheer on the racers and ideal for photographers.  For more information, visit www.necheswildernessrace.com

If you are a foodie and love trains, book your tickets for the Streamliner Diner. The Texas State Railroad is pleased to present its newest signature dining experience on the Piney Woods Excursion Train, the Streamliner Diner. Reminiscent of mid-century rail dining, guests are treated to a delicious meal and spectacular East Texas scenery from vintage dome and dining rail cars. Departures from Rusk or Palestine feature different equipment so you’re sure not to have the same trip twice! 


            The Streamliner Diner is a limited-time offer on 19 trains running from August 2 through September 7. Departure time is 11 a.m. with the train returning to the depot at 3:30 p.m. Price - $85 inclusive of rail trip and lunch
